What walker height should I look for?

First, wear the shoes you are most likely to wear when using the walker. Next, stand straight with your arms hanging loosely by your sides. Now, measure the distance from the crease in your wrist (this is where your wrist bends) to the floor.

So, the desired height for a walker is where the top of the  handles line up with the crease in your wrists. Now, when the arms are holding the handles, the elbows will be about 15 degrees. By the way, the arm is strongest in this position for pushing down. However, if the shoulders are elevated, the walker is too high. Also, people using a walker often push it too far ahead of them and thus walk bent over.

Furthermore, you want to select a walker whose height can be adjusted so that the handle is at least an inch lower and an inch higher than the desired height. Moreover, walkers that are too low cause you to stoop over while you walk, which impedes proper body mechanics. Regrettably, if your walker is at the wrong height, you will be prone to aches and pains.

Why is the walker's width important?

Next if you are going to use the walker in the home, you need to measure the width of all the doorways and hallways you will walk through. Most of all, don't forget the bathroom doors, because they tend to have the smallest width. By the way, when you measure the doorway opening, measure the distance between edge of the door protruding into the passageway near the hinges to the opposite side of the door passageway.
