How do you Evaluate these Machines?

In fact, use the factors described below to grade these pedal exercisers and mini exercise bikes.

Assembly

First, assembling the pedal exerciser should be easy. In fact, the less assembly required, the better.

Construction

Next, a pedal exerciser made of heavy-duty alloys or steel is preferable. At least the frame must be metal. And, since you may push them hard, the pedals need to be made from heavy duty plastic such as ABS or better. Indeed, the more solid the construction, the longer the pedal exerciser will last, and more stable it will be.

Controller

Most noteworthy, a cabled or remote controller allows you to adjust speed of a motorized pedal exerciser. Consequently, you don't need to bend down to the exerciser to adjust the speed or start and stop the motor.

Dimensions or Footprint

Most of all, the dimensions or footprint tells you how much space the pedal exerciser is going to need, so you can decide if the pedal exerciser is going to fit where you intend to use it.

Display

Displays help you keep track of your workouts. Example of workout measurements include revolutions, time, revolutions per minute, and calories burned. Moreover, you use this information to monitor your progress over time, or simply to ensure you met your daily target.

Exercise

Most of all, a pedal exerciser exercising both arms and legs gives you more options.

Feet

Most of all, the feet are generally made from heavy duty rubber or other similar material to protect the floor and/or the table from scratches and marks. Also, the feet help prevent the pedal exerciser from sliding as you pedal. Indeed, nearly all pedal exercisers are lightweight weighing less than 26 pounds. In addition, most people try to use the pedals as they would a recumbent bike – namely by pushing the pedals away from you. This pushing action is a consequence of the chair being behind the pedal exerciser – as with a recumbent bike. Moreover, this pushing action pushes the pedal exerciser away from you. So instead of pushing on the pedals, push the pedals down towards the floor. Consequently, the pedal exerciser may stay in place as you peddle.

Especially relevant, several pedal exercisers provide straps to tie the pedal exercise to the chair. On the other hand, if you choose one without the straps, there are ways to prevent the pedal exerciser from sliding.

  1. 1
Put the chair and the pedal exerciser on a rubber matting
  2. 2
Tether the pedal exerciser to the chair using a rope or solid rubber strap with hooks on either end

Foldability

Next, foldability refers to the ability of the pedal exerciser to be folded so that it's footprint is reduced. Consequently, the pedal exercisers are easier to move and store.

Handle

A handle makes it easier to move the pedal exerciser around with one hand.

Height

If the pedal exerciser is going to be used under a desk, you need to measure the distance between the top of your knee, when sitting on a chair, and the floor with your shoes on. Next you need to measure the highest point the top of the pedal reaches above the floor. Next, the sum of these two numbers needs to be less than the distance between the underside of the table or desk top and the floor.

Motor

Especially relevant, if present, the motor is used to drive the pedals. Consequently, a motor with adjustable speed gives you different workout intensities. Meanwhile, in the United States, the motor should operate on a standard 120 volt power supply.

Noise

Because the pedal exercisers are likely to be used in office environments or while watching TV or reading a book, they need to run as quietly as possible. Most of all, pedal exercisers using magnetic resistance run quieter. On the other hand, pedal exercisers that use friction for resistance tend to be noisy. To reduce this noise, take the tension knob out and put graphite powder in the tension knob’s hole. And then screw back the tension knob.

Pedals

Most of all, to drive the pedals with your feet, the pedals need to be non-slip or else your feet will not grip the pedals. In addition, pedal straps help grab your feet to the pedal. Moreover, the pedal straps need to be adjustable to accommodate various shoe sizes.

Sliding

Next, it's important that the pedal exerciser does not move on the floor as you use the exerciser. In fact, pedal exercisers are used on carpets, mats, solid and smooth floors. Some of the ways, sliding is minimized include feet design, pedal exerciser weight, and straps holding the pedal exerciser to the chair.

Tension

Tension is sometimes referred to as resistance. And, nearly all pedal exercisers provide the capability to adjust tension so that you can change your workout intensity. However, not all pedal exercisers provide markers that allow you to easily identify tension levels. Furthermore, such markers help you record tension levels of your workouts. And these markers are especially important, if the pedal exerciser is used by others.

Most noteworthy, tension based on friction will cause metal parts in the vicinity to heat up. Pedal exercisers that offer protection from contact with the heated parts are better than those which don’t. Furthermore, depending on the pedal speed, and the length of time pedaling, heating could start to be felt as soon as 15 minutes after starting. However, if you are pedaling slowly, heat from friction likely won’t be an issue. Be that as it may, you can reduce the build up of heat by lubricating. In fact, to lubricate, take the tension knob out and put graphite powder in the tension knob’s hole. And then screw back the tension knob.

Transportation

Because the pedal exercisers are used under the desk, in front of a couch, on a table, among other places, being lightweight becomes an advantage in terms of moving it from one location to another.

Use

In addition, manufacturers design pedal exercisers for different use. So, you want to look at pedal exercisers targeted to your need. For example, some pedal exercisers are designed for the handicapped, some for beginners. While others are designed for strengthening your arms and legs or used under a desk, while in the office or at home.

Warranty

The longer the warranty period the better you are protected against manufacturing defects. Generally, a 90-day period will cover majority of manufacturing defects. Since most defects are found in this period, it’s important to ensure your purchase is covered during that time. In addition, a longer warranty period, implies that the pedal exerciser is better built to last a longer time.

Weight

Next, pedal exercisers that weigh less are easier to carry around. On the other hand, heavier pedal exercisers offer more stability.

Weight Capacity

Finally, the weight capacity refers to the maximum weight of the person for which the pedal exerciser is designed.

Conclusion

In conclusion, you are looking for essentially a pedal exerciser that:

  • 1
Will allow you to use the pedal exerciser under or near a desk or a table or on a table, or next to a couch.
  • 2
    Is reasonably solid
  • 3
    Is quiet
  • 4
    Offers adjustable tension
  • 5
Displays exercise time, count of revolutions, revolutions per minute, and calories burned
  • 6
Has at least a 90-day warranty

What are Your Needs?

First and foremost, itemize what you want from a pedal exerciser. For example, the list below gives you a start.

  • 1
How much physical space is there for the pedal exerciser?
  • 2
Does the pedal exerciser need to keep track of workouts?
  • 3
Is the pedal exerciser going to be used for exercising your arms and legs?
  • 4
How much use is the pedal exerciser going to get every day?

Indeed, answers to these questions and others will help guide you to the pedal exerciser that's best for you.

What Problems do these Machines Solve?

Hours Spent Sitting

According to the 2017 American time use survey by Bureau of Labor Statistics, part of the average American’s time each day is spent as follows:

  • 1
1.11 hours on eating and drinking
  • 2
    4.14 hours working
  • 3
    0.52 hours on socializing,
  • 4
    2.5 hours watching TV
  • 5
0.16 hours on the telephone, going to mail, and email

For the most part, all these activities involve sitting. As a result, the average American spends 8.43 hours each day sitting.  Most noteworthy, this number is consistent with other surveys and studies on sitting.

Consequences of Too Much Sitting

Especially relevant, prolonged sitting on a regular basis results in health problems such as:

  • 1
    Metabolic syndrome
  • 2
    Poor blood circulation
  • 3
    Obesity
  • 4
    Posture
  • 5
    Develop diseases
  • 6
    Cancer
  • 7
    Mental Health
  • 8
    Longevity
  • 9
    Mortality

But most of all, prolonged sitting effects muscles in the arms and the lower body.

Effect of Sitting on Arm Muscles

The major muscle groups in the arms are:

  • 1
The biceps located in front of the upper arms
  • 2
The triceps located in the back of upper arms, and
  • 3
    Forearms in the lower arms

All these arm muscles are affected by sitting too much. In fact, the triceps are a common area for fat deposits, meaning you’re most likely to notice excess, flabby skin in this area.

Effect of Sitting on Lower Body Muscles

The legs contain the most muscle groups in your body. Too much sitting causes the quads, hamstrings, and calves to change. In fact, these muscles become less toned as the muscles get smaller and less defined. Indeed, the effects are first seen on your upper legs and hips, where fat deposits are common. These changes are largely because fat in this area tends to be less metabolically active than fat in other areas of the body.

Next, the buttocks are made up of three major muscle groups: the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus. Too much sitting causes these muscles to soften and become undefined, leaving the butt looking flat and misshapen. Moreover, as these muscles lose their tone, you may have difficulty maintaining good balance.

That’s where pedal exercisers help. In fact, pedal exercisers are used to exercise legs while working at a desk. Furthermore, pedal exercisers are used when sitting in a chair to exercise arms and legs.

How do these Machines Solve the Problems?

How much does Physical Activity Help?

First and foremost, a study was published in the March 21 2019 edition of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. In fact, the study looked at 14 years of activity and inactivity data of 92,500 people. Meanwhile, one study group consisted of participants who were least active with less than 17 minutes a day of moderate to vigorous physical activity. And, the study found that if these participants replaced just 30 minutes of sitting with light activity, their risk of premature death falls by 14 percent. On the other hand, if these participants replaced 30 minutes of sitting with moderate to vigorous physical activity, their risk of premature death fell by an even larger 45 percent.

Is there Proof that Using Pedal Exercisers Really Helps Your Body?

First and foremost, many studies show that physical inactivity and sedentary work environments increases insulin resistance. Moreover, this increase in insulin resistance leads to higher risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Incidentally, University of Massachusetts researchers published a study in October 2018 issue of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. Indeed, the study reported that pedaling while working improves the body’s insulin response.

Meanwhile, the study comprised of six men and six women overweight/obese full-time sedentary office workers. And, these seated participants pedaled for two hours while working at their desks. Incidentally, the participants pedaled at their own pace for as little or as much time as they chose.

Next, after eating a light meal, the participants provided blood samples. The blood samples were used for analysis of metabolic responses of glucose, insulin and free fatty acids. Indeed, glucose, insulin, and free fatty acids are linked to obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

When compared to sedentary behavior, the study showed that pedaling required significantly less insulin to maintain glucose concentrations. Consequently, their insulin levels were lower, which in turn, reduced their risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Consequently, the body doesn’t work so hard to maintain blood glucose and fatty acid levels when pedaling. Best of all, their work output and efficiency were not affected by the pedaling.

Finally, pedaling is better than treadmill or standing desk because long periods of standing lowers productivity besides being tiring.

Exercising Leg Muscles

Leg muscles are exercised by pedal exercisers. In fact, the exerciser is set on the floor with you sitting in a chair behind it. Furthermore, in this mode, the exerciser is used to strengthen and tone legs. Especially relevant, the muscles exercised include the hips flexors, glutes, calves, hamstrings and quadriceps.

Exercising Arm Muscles

Meanwhile, some pedal exercisers are used for exercising arms. In fact, the pedal exerciser is placed on a table while you are sitting in a chair. Furthermore, in this mode, the pedal exerciser is used to strengthen and tone arms. Especially relevant, the muscles exercised include the biceps, triceps, shoulders and forearms.

Other Health Benefits

Most of all, pedal exercisers provide the following benefits:

  • 1
    Prevents varicose veins.
  • 2
Exercises calf muscles which increases blood circulation to your feet and ankles and stops blood from pooling. As a result, your risk of deep vein thrombosis or blood clots is reduced.
  • 3
Reduces numbness in feet and ankles
  • 4
Prevents swelling of feet, ankles, and legs from water retention due to edema. Indeed, regular use of the pedal exerciser, will reduce these symptoms of edema.
  • 5
Reduces damage to the knees. In fact, the smooth moving pedal exerciser does not cause body joints to get jerked or suddenly shocked. However, while the pedal exerciser does not harm the knees, people with sustained injuries or weak knees should consult a doctor before using the pedal exerciser.
  • 6
    Helps you lose weight
  • 7
    Gives you some aerobic exercise

Only some pedal exercisers help strengthen and tone arms. In fact, these pedal exercisers exercises biceps, triceps, shoulders and forearms.

How are these Machines Used?

The Wrong Way

First and foremost, a pedal exerciser shouldn’t be used like a recumbent bike. Most noteworthy, when you use a recumbent bike, because the seat is somewhat away from the pedals, you end up pushing the pedals forward. So, if you do this with the pedal exerciser too far away from your chair, the pedal exerciser will either slide or tilt forward.

The Correct Way

Therefore, keep the pedal exerciser closer to the chair. And, don’t start pedaling until the pedal arm is in the 1 o’clock position. At that time, push the pedals downward towards the floor. And, make sure your toes are pointing forward not upwards. Consequently, you can pedal downward even when you are sitting on a low chair or couch. Moreover, when you are sitting in a low chair or couch, you work both the quads and the hamstrings.

Also, by starting at very little resistance you can learn the correct way to pedal. Most of all, focus on pedaling downwards. In addition, pedal for at least 15 minutes at very little resistance. Next, increase the resistance a little and pedal for another 15 minutes. And, repeat this sequence until you reach a resistance where you are comfortable pedaling.

Lower Body Workout

First, place pedal exerciser underneath your desk, or on the floor in front of a couch or chair. And do 20 minutes of pedaling with no resistance. Next, increase resistance and do another 20 minutes. And, repeat sequence, as necessary, to complete workout.

Arm Exercises

First, place pedal exerciser on a table with rubber mat. Next, grab pedals by the hands and rotate them forward, changing the resistance to make it somewhat of an effort. And do this for 15 minutes. Next, change direction and rotate pedals backwards for another 15 minutes. Repeat sequence, as necessary, to complete workout.

Stretch Arm Muscles

Firstly, to stretch arm muscles, put elbow on the table with your arm bent, while keeping the other arm free. Secondly, position the top of your hand so that it is touching the pedal and grasp the pedals with fingers. Thirdly, starting with no resistance, slowly push down on the pedal. Next, pull the pedal back up. And, repeat with the other arm. Next, increase resistance and repeat sequence, as necessary, to complete workout.

Strengthen Upper Body Muscles

First, place pedal exerciser on a table with rubber mat. Next, grab pedals by the hands and rotate them forward, starting at zero resistance And, do this for 10 minutes. Next, gradually increase time and resistance. And, repeat sequence, as necessary, to complete workout.

Knee Injury

Most of all, you can use the pedal exerciser to increase flexibility of muscles surrounding your injured knee. Firstly, sit in a firm but comfortable chair to stabilize your back. Secondly, place the pedal exerciser in front of you. Thirdly, place your feet on the pedals and slowly pedal with zero resistance. Next, gradually increase time and resistance and repeat, as necessary, to complete workout.

Stretching Injured Knee

Finally, the pedal exerciser can be used as a stretching machine. Firstly, slide feet of the leg with injured knee in the pedal next to the floor. Secondly, rotate pedal to the highest height using the leg with injured knee. And hold that position. Next, gently push pedal back down and pull back up. And, repeat this sequence for 5 cycles.

Other Under Desk Exercise Machines

Comparison with Other Under Desk Exercise Machines

First and foremost, under desk pedals have a circular motion of the lower legs and hence more circular movement of the knees. In addition, under desk pedals exercise glutes, quads, hamstrings, and to a lesser extent the calves.

Meanwhile, the stepping action of sitting steppers requires pushing down on the pedals against hydraulic resistance. As a result, there is greater stress on the knees. But a better lower leg muscle workout, especially of the glutes, quads, hamstrings, and calves.

Finally, under desk elliptical machines produces a walking action swinging the lower legs back and forth. Consequently, the joints relax during the exercise. In addition, the under desk elliptical machines don’t put too much stress on the legs.

What are the Best Ways to Get Relief from Back Pain

What are the Best Ways to Get Relief from Back Pain

First and foremost, at some point in their lives, close to 80 percent of Americans try to get relief from back pain of some kind. Next, adult women experience more back pain than adult men. Also, 33 percent of adults say back pain effects everyday activities, including sleep. Moreover, 90 percent of acute low back pain is resolved within six weeks.

Relief from Back Pain

Relief from Back Pain due to Spine Problems

Ankylosing Spondylitis

This type of arthritis typically starts by making your lower back and hips stiff and sore, especially in the morning. Over time, it spreads up your spine and to other joints and organs. Vertebrae and bones in the rib cage could fuse, leaving you hunched over. Young men get it more often than women and it may be hereditary. Early treatment with exercise and medication helps slow the progress.

Cauda Equina Syndrome

The nerves that branch out from your spine in the lower back help your brain control your legs and the organs in your pelvis. A herniated disk, fracture, or other condition could put pressure on this group of nerves, called the cauda equina. Surgery is needed right away to restore any loss of feeling, movement, or control of your bladder and bowels.

Cervical Spondylosis

As you get older, the following can happen to the spine in your neck: you could get a slipped disk; or the vertebrae may sprout extra bone, called spurs; or the ligaments that connect the vertebrae can get stiff and tight. Consequently, your neck may hurt or harder to move. Or you could have permanent damage if the disks or vertebrae squeeze nerves and nerve roots a lot.

Relief from Back Pain due to Kyphosis

In this condition the spine bends forward. It usually happens when the vertebrae crack or mash down. It’s most common in older women. It can cause pain and other problems, and, in severe cases, it bends your whole body out of shape. Treatment include painkillers, exercise, or surgery.

Osteoarthritis

Most noteworthy, each of the Spine’s vertebrae has slippery tissue at both ends that helps the back flex without friction. If this cartilage gets rough or wears down, the vertebrae start to rub against each other, and it makes your back painful or stiff. Known as Osteoarthritis, this problem occurs because of:

  1. 1
Repeated overuse from performing a specific task or
  2. 2
    Playing a favorite sport or
  3. 3
Exercising such as jogging or running for years or
  4. 4
From carrying around excess body weight

Eventually the repeated impact, from these activities, thins or wears away the cartilage that cushions the ends of the vertebrae. As a result, the vertebrae rub together, causing a grating sensation. Joint flexibility is reduced, bony spurs develop, and the joint swells. Usually, the first symptom of osteoarthritis is pain that worsens following exercise or immobility. Regrettably, osteoarthritis tends to get worse over time. While it can’t be reversed, painkiller, therapy, and exercise can help ease the symptoms.

Osteoporosis

In the United States, more than 53 million people either already have osteoporosis or are at high risk due to low bone mass. In fact, osteoporosis, is a condition resulting from loss of bone tissue. As a result, bones become less dense and more likely to fracture. In addition, osteoporosis can result in a loss of height, severe back pain, and change in posture. Finally, osteoporosis, can impair a person’s ability to walk and can cause prolonged or permanent disability.

Most noteworthy, some of the risk factors for developing osteoporosis include:

  1. 1
    Thinness or small body frame
  2. 2
    Family history of the disease
  3. 3
Being postmenopausal and particularly having had early menopause
  4. 4
Abnormal absence of menstrual periods (amenorrhea)
  5. 5
Prolonged use of certain medications, such as those used to treat lupus, asthma, thyroid deficiencies, and seizures
  6. 6
    Low calcium intake
  7. 7
    Lack of physical activity
  8. 8
    Smoking
  9. 9
    Excessive alcohol intake.

Incidentally, osteoporosis can progress undetected for many years without symptoms until a fracture occurs. Osteoporosis is diagnosed by a bone density scanner.

Relief from Back Pain due to Sciatica

The sciatica nerve causes pain to shoot down your lower back through into your leg. This happens because a herniated disk, bone spur, or some other spine problems puts pressure on the nerve. Hot packs, cold packs, stretching and painkillers can help.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is a condition where your spine is out of shape. The most common type affects children during their growth spurt bending the spine sideways. The shoulders might be uneven or one shoulder blade might stick out more than the other. A brace may help as well as surgery.

Slipped or Herniated Disk

A cushion called a disk is located between each pair of vertebrae. As you get older, these disks start to dry out. Consequently, if you put too much stress on your back, the disk may tear or break. As a result of this herniated disk, the arms or legs might hurt or fell numb or tingly. Hopefully exercise or painkiller may help. If not, the only alternative is to have an operation.

Spinal Stenosis

The spine has a space in the middle for the spinal cord and nerves that branch out. When those space shrink, bones can press against the nerves. Any time these nerves are touched, you could feel pain, tingling, or numbness, or your muscles might seem weak.

About 90% of those with this condition develop it as part of the natural process of aging. As you age, your bones naturally go through a process of degeneration. This is called spondylosis. This process is worsened by osteoarthritis—arthritis of the bone that is felt in the joints. This leaves less space between your individual vertebrae which, along with loss of bone mass, can promote bone spurs. Your body’s facet joints begin to grow to account for the extra stress your back is put under by this process. That leaves even less space for the nerve roots that flow through your spinal cord and down your spine. In severe cases, a surgeon can make more room for the nerves.

Spondylolisthesis

Vertebrae may slide sideways, so that they don’t line up with the ones above or below them. This is a main cause of lower back pain. It happens as your body ages, but it can affect young people who do sports that stress the lower back like football, gymnastics, and weightlifting. Rest helps, but surgery might be needed.

Syringomyelia

Sometimes, a little fluid-filled sac called a cyst can form in the spinal cord. It could happen when brain tissue pushes down from your skull into your spinal cord or from an injury or tumor. Syringomyelia does cause problems. However, if the cyst keeps growing, in can injure your spinal cord, in which case surgery is needed.

Tumor

Cancer growing in the lungs, breasts, prostate, and bone more likely spreads to the spine. Consequently, your back hurts with the pain spreading throughout the body. Your arms or legs may become numb or weak. Part of you body could even be paralyzed. At this point, surgery, radiation, or chemo are the most likely way to get some relief.

Relief from Back Pain due to Behavioral Causes

Backpack

Backpacks are great for carrying load as you walk or hike. However, the wrong backpack or not wearing it correctly puts a strain on your shoulders, neck, and back, as well as tiring out muscles supporting your spine. Therefore, use the following guidelines to avoid or lessen these effects.

  1. 1
Reduce the weight in the backpack. In fact, heavy load may cause spinal discs to compress
  2. 2
    Carry only what is essential
  3. 3
Put the heaviest items close to your back and the lighter items on the outside away from your back
  4. 4
Use a backpack with wide padded shoulder straps. The width and the padding helps distribute the load as well as providing a cushion.
  5. 5
Because it helps distribute the load, always use both straps to carry the backpack
  6. 6
Better still, get a backpack with a waist belt. These take some of the load off the shoulders. Consequently, neck pain and back pain above the waist is reduced.

Relief from Back Pain From Wrong Type of Bicycle

Hunching over to grab the handlebars of a bicycle, like a professional is bad for your back. Regrettably, you get back pain if you are too stretched out or cramped up on the bicycle. Therefore, before you buy a bike, get an expert to verify if the bicycle is right for you.

Exercise

First and foremost, regular exercise helps prevent or aggravate back pain. In fact, back pain is more common in those who are unfit or overweight. Also, those who only exercise intermittently have an increased risk of back injury. Most noteworthy, those with acute back injury can recover with a mild exercise program that gradually gets intense.

Meanwhile, don’t do too much of any exercise (including yoga) because overdoing exercise causes back pain. Finally, people who are too thin are also at risk for back pain, especially those with eating disorders and osteoporosis.

Food

Above all, eating unhealthy foods means your body doesn’t get enough nutrients to stay strong and this leads to inflammation. In fact, processed foods made with refined white flour and white sugar are top culprits in causing inflammation. Most noteworthy, these processed foods include packaged white breads and rolls, baked goods and candy. Also, soda and other sugar-sweetened drinks are in the same category.

Next, fried foods and fats -- such as margarine, shortening and lard -- also promote inflammation. So do processed red meats, like bacon, sausages, hot dogs, salami and other deli meats. Even lean red meat should be limited to once or twice a week.

Instead, replace these foods with those known to be anti-inflammatory, those high in natural antioxidants and other protective compounds.
Incidentally, these include good-for-you fats such as mono- and poly-unsaturated plant-based oils, most types of nuts and seeds, and fish with omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, tuna and sardines. Furthermore, other anti-inflammatory foods that should be on your menu are whole grains, green leafy vegetables and tomatoes. Citrus fruits, berries and cherries are also key for fighting inflammation. Next, the body needs lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, and healthy fats like those found in an avocado, to build strong bones, muscles and soft tissue in your back. Finally, eat foods containing nutrients like phosphorus, calcium and vitamin D.

Regrettably, overeating makes you add extra pounds, which put a strain on the bones and muscles in the back. Therefore, it’s best to eat slowly healthy foods with fewer calories.

Relief from Back Pain due to Jogging or Running

As you get older, its best to stop running or jogging. Above all, running or jogging jar your body and the vertebrae with each step. Regrettably, as you get holder, this jarring can lead to arthritis in the lumbar region of the spine. If you must, see your medical provider regularly to make sure the bones in your spine are not deteriorating. You don’t want to wait until it’s too late at which point you have no choice but to stop both running and jogging.

Lifting Weights

Next, lifting weights excessively can result in back pain. Most of all, it’s important to lift weights using correct form. So, if you are not sure what that form is, ask a trainer at the local gym or sports club to show you the correct technique.

Other

Back pain can also be caused by injuries, disk degeneration, and infections.

Sedentary

Next, being sedentary is another reason for back pain. Above all, your spine needs support from strong stomach and back muscles. And, lifting weights or climbing stairs can help. Also, low-impact exercises like walking, biking, or swimming can help by protecting the disks between the spine’s vertebrae.

Sitting for Long Periods of Time

Next, sitting for long periods of time stresses back muscles, neck, and spine. Also, your body doesn’t like sitting for long stretches. So, to relieve your body, it’s best to get up and move around for a few minutes every 30 minutes.

In addition, every hour, gently stretch and move your head and neck in all four directions. Also, once is a while try leaning back in the chair with your feet on the floor with a slight curve in the lower back. Finally, at every opportunity, stand for a few minutes.

Relief from Back Pain due to Sitting Position

One cause of back pain is from sitting hunched over a desk working on a computer. Another cause is from slouching in a chair.  Regrettably, if you hunch over or slouch often enough, over time, the spine’s natural curve is affected. In addition, the cushioning of the disks that lie between the spine’s vertebrae gets damaged. Consequently, arthritis starts to show up.

Moreover, sitting up too straight, in a chair, can also result in back pain. In fact, the best remedy for this is to sit straight in a chair that supports your back. Also, set the chair’s height so that your feet rest naturally on the floor.

Sit-ups

Sit-ups are hard on your back. They push your curved spine against the floor and work your hip flexors. Incidentally, hip flexors are muscles that run from the thighs to the lumbar vertebrae in the lower back. Moreover, when the hip flexors are too strong or too tight, they pull on the lower spine, which puts stress on the lower back.

Instead, do planks. They use a better balance of muscles on the front, sides, and back of the body than sit-ups which only targets a few muscles.

Sleeping Mattress

First and foremost, sleeping on a mattress that hasn’t been replaced in years can hurt your back. Indeed, the mattress needs to be firm enough to support your back, but soft enough to fit the shape of your body.

However, people differ in their response to mattress firmness. In fact, a study on mattress firmness was done in Spain. Some of the study participants slept on a medium-firm mattress. Indeed, a medium-firm mattress is one that is rated 5.6 on a 10 point hard-to-soft scale.  showed that those who slept on a medium-firm mattress (rated 5.6 on a 10 point hard-to-soft scale) had less back pain and disability than those who slept on a firm mattress (2.3 on the scale).

Therefore, at the next opportunity, try out a new mattress and find one that helps you the best.

Relief from Back Pain due to Sleeping Position

While sleeping on your back is fine for some people, for others this can cause low back pain or make the back pain that they already have even worse. If you are used to sleeping this way, one way to get relief is by putting a rolled towel or pillow under your knees. This will help keep the natural curve of you back.

On the other hand, sleeping on your belly is bad if you have a back problem. However, if you are used to sleeping on your belly, put your head on a very soft pillow or sleep without a pillow. This will help keep your neck and back in the best position.

Meanwhile, side sleeping is the best option for a back pain. In addition, putting a pillow between your legs takes the pressure off your hips and lower back.

Smoking

Smoking decreases blood flow to your spine. Consequently, the cushioning disks between your vertebrae break down quicker. Smoking can also weaken bones and give you osteoporosis. Even coughs from smoking can cause back pain. So, it’s best to stop smoking.

Remedies to Get Relief from Back Pain

  1. 1
Bed rest helps with an acute back strain or injury. But don’t stay in bed too long. In fact, remaining immobile in bed can make the back pain worse.
  2. 2
Other things that help back pain include spinal manipulation and massage from a chiropractor, acupuncture can relieve many types of backpain that do not respond to other treatments. Yoga, progressive relaxation, and cognitive behavioral therapy can also help.

The Many Ways Medical Peddler Helps People Get Better

The Many Ways Medical Peddler Helps People Get Better

Medical Peddler is used for physical therapy to help people get better. Moreover, described below, are examples of the ways a medical peddler is used.

Medical Peddlers

Medical Peddler to Help Knee Replacement Surgery Patients

The first four days, after a knee replacement surgery, are spent recovering from the surgery. However, from day 5 to week 4, the medical pedal exerciser may be used to strengthen the knee. Because pedaling backward is easier on the knee start your recovery by pedaling backwards. And, pedal forward only after a comfortable cycling motion is achieved by pedaling backwards.

In addition, as you become stronger (at about 4 to 6 weeks) slowly increase the tension on the medical peddler. Meanwhile, start using the medical peddler for 10 to 15 minutes twice a day. And gradually build up so that you are using the medical peddler for 20 to 30 minutes twice a day. Furthermore, use the medical peddler three or four times a week.

Medical Peddler to Help Those with Parkinson’s

Why the Disease Develops

First and foremost, neurons, in an area of the brain called substantia nigra are responsible for producing a neurotransmitter called dopamine. Regrettably, in some people, these neurons gradually die. As a result, dopamine levels fall. And, when dopamine levels fall, motor symptoms such as tremors and bradykinesia (or slow movement) start to appear.

Treatment

Above all, the current treatment for Parkinson’s disease is Levodopa. In fact, Levodopa increases dopamine levels in the brain. Regrettably, Levodopa can’t help the damaged neurons.

Exercise Increases Dopamine Levels

However, there is some evidence that exercise increases dopamine levels. In fact, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans of 17 Parkinson’s patients showed that habitual exercisers had higher dopamine levels in the dorsal striatum. By the way, the dorsal striatum also receives dopamine from the substantia nigra. And higher levels of dopamine in the dorsal striatum helps control movement.

Exercise Improves Motor Symptoms

In addition, exercise also helped Parkinson’s patients perform better on functional tests assessing motor symptoms such as the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) part 3.

Exercise Increases BDNF

Moreover, exercise may be even better than levodopa. In fact, exercise also increases brain-derived-neurotrophic-factor (BDNF). And BDNF promotes survival of neurons that make dopamine, namely the neurons in the substantia nigra.

In fact, studies show that BDNF levels in Parkinson’s patients were lower than in healthy people. Furthermore, studies show that patients who exercised for 8 to 12 weeks increased serum levels of BDNF. In addition, another study showed that consistent aerobic exercise increased BDNF serum levels in healthy people. On the other hand, strength training had no effect on BDNF levels.

High-Intensity Exercises Help UPDRS Scores

Yet, another study showed that newly diagnosed patients who did high-intensity treadmill exercises for 30 minutes four times a week, maintained their UPDRS scores.

Motorized Pedals Helps Parkinson’s Patients

Meanwhile, a 2009 study at the Cleveland Clinic, showed that a motorized cycle improved aerobic capacity as well as UPDRS part 3 scores. Especially relevant, a motorized cycle was better than those who cycled using only their own strength. Indeed, the motorized cycle made the riders keep pedaling, while those who cycled on their own effort, tended to slack off, thereby not getting all the benefits they could.

Motorized Pedals Improves Thalamo-Cortical Connectivity

Also, another study showed that forced (as by a motor) pedaling rate improved thalamo-cortical connectivity. In fact, thalamo-cortical connectivity plays an important role in cognition. Consequently, improving the thalamo-cortical connectivity improves cognition. Meanwhile, the faster the pedaling rate the greater the improvements in thalamo-cortical connectivity.

Exercise Delays Parkinson’s Motor Symptoms

Most noteworthy, exercise may help delay worsening of Parkinson’s motor symptoms. In fact, a study, involving more than 12,000 Parkinson’s patients, reported that exercising 2.5 hours a week slows the decline of motor symptoms. In addition, other similar studies recommend advising newly diagnosed Parkinson’s patients about the benefits of regular exercising.

Medical Peddler to Help Those with Cystic Fibrosis

What is Cystic Fibrosis

First and foremost, cystic fibrosis is a chronic disease that results in progressive obstructive lung disease, chronic malnutrition due to pancreatic insufficiency and ultimately a shortened lifespan. Above all, cystic fibrosis is a hereditary disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. In fact, the body produces a thick and sticky mucus that can clog the lungs and obstruct the pancreas. Most noteworthy, advances in treatment means that people with cystic fibrosis often live into their 30s, 40s, and beyond.

Regrettably, currently there is no cure for cystic fibrosis. Furthermore, some 30,000 people in the United States have cystic fibrosis. In addition, 1,000 new cases of cystic fibrosis develop each year.

Why the Disease Develops

First and foremost, cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease. In fact, the defective gene responsible for cystic fibrosis leads to the creation of mucus that is thicker and stickier than usual. Moreover, the mucus is difficult to cough out of the lungs. Consequently, breathing is difficult and leads to severe lung infections. In addition, the mucus interferes with pancreatic functions by preventing enzymes from properly breaking down food. Consequently, digestive problems result, which can lead to malnutrition.

Treatment

There is currently no cure for cystic fibrosis. Meanwhile, treatment only manages the symptoms of the disease. On the other hand, researchers are looking into how physical exercise can help clear airways and improve overall lung function.

Exercise as a Treatment

Especially relevant, a study theorized that physical exercise may serve to increase sputum expectoration secondary to vibratory effects and increased levels of ventilation. In addition, the study theorized that exercise may lead to strengthening of ventilatory muscles as well as possibly altering conductance of sodium channels, leading to less sodium reabsorption and increased mucus hydration.

Also, the study measured nasal potential differences during exercise and showed that there did seem to be an alteration in sodium conductance during exercise and that this may be partly responsible for the benefits noted in cystic fibrosis patients who exercise.

Meanwhile, it has been found that exercise is associated with increased pulmonary function, fitness levels, everyday functioning and survival rates. And, there were both short term as well as long term benefits from an exercise program.

Aerobic Workouts Using a Medical Peddler

Patients who participated in an intensive aerobic workout using pedal exercisers or exercise cycles or a strength training session had a short-term increase in their Forced Expired Volume in one second (FEV1).  In addition, patients who participated in exercise on a regular basis, not only had this short-term effect, but also had a long term benefit of decreased rate of decline in their Forced Vital Capacity (FVC).

Indeed, regular exercise, using pedal exercisers or exercise cycles, leads to increased aerobic capacity, activity levels, quality of life, weight gain, lung function, leg strength and a decrease in decline in lung function.  Therefore, exercise likely led to increased airway clearance and possible improved ion channel function as well.  In fact, the outcome of this study showed that if activity levels increased over time, the patient’s rate of decline in their FEV1 decreased.

Effectiveness of Aerobics on Survival Rates

Finally, a study followed cystic fibrosis patients over an 8-year period. Most of all, the study looked at their survival rates in relationship to their aerobic fitness, age, gender, BMI, FEV1, end tidal CO2. Also, the study measured their fitness in terms of oxygen consumption at peak exercise intensity (VO2 peak). And, the study found that:

  1. 1
Those with the highest level of fitness (VO2 peak > 82%), had increased rates of survival, even when taking into consideration their other risk factors, and
  2. 2
Those with the lowest level of fitness (VO2 peak < 58%), were 3 times more likely to die during the 8 years as those with the highest level of fitness.

How do you Evaluate these Ellipticals?

In fact, use the factors described below to grade these elliptical exercisers.

Assembly

While it would be preferable to get an under desk elliptical ready for use upon delivery, assembling the elliptical should be easy. In fact, the less assembly required, the better.

Construction

Next, an under desk elliptical made of heavy-duty alloys or steel is preferable. At least the frame must be metal. And, since you may push them hard, the pedals need to be made from heavy duty plastic such as ABS or better. Indeed, the more solid the construction, the longer the under desk elliptical will last, and more stable it will be.

Dimensions

Also, the under desk elliptical should fit wherever it’s going to be used. For example, if it’s going to be used under a desk, then the under desk elliptical shouldn’t take up all the space underneath the desk. Furthermore, it’s low enough for you to use it underneath the desk.

Display

Displays help you keep track of your workouts. Example of workout metrics include exercise time, strides, total strides, strides per minute, and calories burned. Moreover, you use this information to monitor your progress over time, or simply to ensure you met your daily target.

Exercise

Next, the under desk elliptical exercises the muscles you want to get exercised.

Handles

A handle makes it easier to move the under desk elliptical around with one hand. In the meantime, the heavier the under desk elliptical, the greater the need for a handle.

Height

If the under desk elliptical is going to be used under a desk, you need to measure the distance between the top of your knee, when sitting on a chair, and the floor with your shoes on. Next you need to measure the highest point the top of the pedal reaches above the floor. Next, the sum of these two numbers needs to be less than the distance between the underside of the table or desk top and the floor.

Noise

Because the under desk elliptical is likely to be used in office environments or while watching TV or reading a book, it needs to run as quietly as possible. Most of all, under desk elliptical using magnetic resistance run quieter. On the other hand, under desk elliptical that use friction for resistance tend to be noisy.

Pedals

Most of all, to drive the pedals with your feet, the pedals need to be non-slip and have a textured surface or else your feet will not grip the pedals.

Pedal Movement

Next, different muscles are exercised when the pedals move forwards and backwards.

Sliding

Furthermore, the under desk elliptical should not slide on carpets, mats, and hard floors as you use the machine.

Tension

Tension is sometimes referred to as resistance. And, nearly all under desk elliptical provide the capability to adjust tension so that you can change your workout intensity. However, not all under desk ellipticals provide markers that allow you to easily identify tension levels. Furthermore, such markers help you record tension levels of your workouts. And these markers are especially important, if the under desk elliptical is used by others.

Transportation

Because the under desk elliptical may be used under a desk, in front of a couch, or some other place, being lightweight becomes an advantage in terms of moving it from one location to another. While lightweight is great for moving the machine, it may make the machine unstable.

Use

In addition, manufacturers design under desk elliptical for different uses. So, you want to look for under desk ellipticals that target your needs. For example, some are designed for strengthening legs while located under a desk in the office or at home. While others give an upper body workout by standing on the machine.

Weight

While, an under desk elliptical that weighs less are easier to carry around, they may not offer enough stability in use. On the other hand, heavier under desk elliptical offer more stability, but may be difficult to move frequently.

Weight Capacity

While under desk elliptical used while sitting is usable for anyone without regard to their weight, their use while standing may require users not exceed weight limits.

Conclusion

In conclusion, you are looking for essentially a under desk elliptical that:

  1. 1
Will allow you to use the under desk elliptical under or near a desk or a table or on a table, or next to a couch
  2. 2
    Is reasonably solid
  3. 3
    Is quiet

What Problems do these Mini Ellipticals Solve?

Hours Spent Sitting

According to the 2017 American time use survey by Bureau of Labor Statistics, part of the average American’s time each day is spent as follows:

  1. 1
1.11 hours on eating and drinking
  2. 2
    4.14 hours working
  3. 3
    0.52 hours on socializing
  4. 4
    2.5 hours watching TV
  5. 5

  1. 1
    Metabolic syndrome
  2. 2
    Poor blood circulation
  3. 3
    Obesity
  4. 4
    Posture
  5. 5
    Develop diseases
  6. 6
    Cancer
  7. 7
    Mental Health
  8. 8
    Longevity
  9. 9
    Mortality

But most of all, prolonged sitting effects muscles in the arms and the lower body.

How does the Mini Elliptical Solve the Problems?

In fact, under desk ellipticals are used to exercise legs while working at a desk. Furthermore, under desk ellipticals are used when sitting in a chair or couch to exercise legs.

Is there Proof that Using Under Desk Elliptical Really Helps Your Body?

First and foremost, many studies show that physical inactivity and sedentary work environments increases insulin resistance. Moreover, this increase in insulin resistance leads to higher risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Incidentally, University of Massachusetts researchers published a study in October 2018 issue of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. Indeed, the study reported that pedaling while working improves the body’s insulin response. While this study used pedals, under desk ellipticals are simply another way to get an equivalent exercise as the pedals. Consequently, the results of this study apply to under desk ellipticals also.

Finally, under desk ellipticals are better than treadmill or standing desk because long periods of standing lowers productivity besides being tiring.

Exercising Leg Muscles

Leg muscles are exercised by under desk ellipticals. The under desk elliptical is set on the floor with you sitting in a chair behind it. Furthermore, in this mode, the elliptical is used to strengthen and tone legs. Especially relevant, the muscles exercised include the hips flexors, glutes, calves, hamstrings and quadriceps.

Calories Burned

A July 2014 study in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport reported on under desk elliptical use. Specifically, the study reported on the feasibility of using under desk ellipticals during sedentary activities. Indeed, 32 physically inactive adults ranging in age from 25 to 65 were recruited.

Overall Average Calories Burned

In fact, participants expended a median of 179 calories per hour while using the under desk elliptical. Moreover, this was 89 calories per hour more than they expended while sedentary. Incidentally, the participants used the under desk elliptical at a rate of 76 strides per minute. Especially relevant, these participants would lose about 9 pounds if they used the under desk elliptical for one hour each day for one whole year.

Calories Burned by Men

Meanwhile, men expended a median of 216 calories per hour while using the under desk elliptical. Moreover, this was 33 calories per hour more than they expended while sedentary. Incidentally, the men used the under desk elliptical at a rate of 85 strides per minute. Especially relevant, these men would lose about 3.5 pounds if they used the under desk elliptical for one hour each day for one whole year. Finally, among the men, there was most interest in using the under desk elliptical for watching TV, reading, and doing computer work.

Calories Burned by Women

Next, women expended a median of 144 calories per hour while using the under desk elliptical. Moreover, this was 76 calories per hour more than they expended while sedentary. Incidentally, the women used the under desk elliptical at a rate of 75 strides per minute. Especially relevant, these women would lose about 8 pounds if they used the under desk elliptical for one hour each day for one whole year. Finally, among the women, there was even greater interest in using the under desk elliptical for watching TV, reading, and doing computer work.

How are these Mini Ellipticals Used?

First and foremost, to get the most out of the under desk elliptical, use proper form. In fact, that is key to a safe and effective workout. Manufacturer guidelines recommend that users sit in a chair that has a slight backward slope, allowing the user to lean back slightly. Also, use a chair that’s not going to move around as you use the under desk elliptical. To be sure, put a mat underneath your chair or use a heavier chair.

The back of the under desk elliptical (which is the side nearest your heels) should be placed roughly 8 to 10 inches from the front of the chair. As a result, your legs are slightly extended during the workout. Next, when a foot is in the "up" or “highest” position, its corresponding thigh should be roughly parallel to the floor, with the knee and lower leg forming an angle of approximately 110 degrees.

Most of all, as you use the under desk elliptical, hold onto the sides of the chair and brace your abdominals throughout the movement. As a result, your leg muscles get isolated which prevents compensatory movements that bring your upper body into the exercise.

How Much Time to Spend on these Under Desk Machines

While there is much to gain from using under desk ellipticals, there are a few things to consider. First and foremost, the under desk elliptical should not become a distraction that causes your work performance to suffer. In fact, it’s best to use the under desk elliptical only with a light workload and you have the time to get a little bit distracted. But, under a moderate to high workload intensity, it’s best to not use the under desk elliptical.

Next, using the under desk elliptical at work for the first time, you are bound to get tired and that may interfere with your work performance. So, cut back and very slowly get used to using the under desk elliptical at work. On the other hand, if you are home and watching TV, there is nothing better than using the under desk elliptical to burn some calories and benefit from watching TV.

Use for Rehab or Injuries

Under desk ellipticals are easier on your joints than under desk pedals. Consequently, they are best for anyone who had a hip or knee replacement surgery. The natural oval movement of the machine ensures that your hips, knees, and ankles stay properly aligned, preventing more wear and tear on your body. And, because many knee injuries are a result of weak quads, a daily low-impact activity, like working out on the under desk elliptical will help to strengthen those muscles.

Next, under desk elliptical machines can increase blood flow to knee cartilage and strengthen the muscles around the knees. This helps keep your knee joints healthy. In addition, under desk ellipticals strengthen your quads, hamstrings, and ankles – all of which helps your knees. By having your feet always pressing into the pedals protects your joints from twisting. Furthermore, it also improves balance and keeps your body in alignment.

Other Under Desk Exercise Machines

Comparison with Other Under Desk Exercise Machines

First and foremost, under desk elliptical machines produces a walking action. Consequently, the joints relax during the exercise. In addition, these elliptical machines don’t put too much stress on the legs.

As a result, these elliptical machines have a lower impact than a sitting stepper. Specifically, the sitting stepper motion requires pushing down on pedals against hydraulic resistance. Consequently, there is greater stress on the knees but a better lower body muscle workout.

Finally, under desk pedals have a greater circular motion of the lower legs and hence more movement of the knees than these elliptical machines.

How do you Evaluate these Pedals?

In fact, use the factors described below to grade these motorized pedal exercisers.

Desk Use

Some people may prefer to use the motorized pedal under a desk or table while they work. Several of the motorized pedal exercisers may fit under a desk or table. It all depends on the maximum height a pedal rises above the floor and the clearance between the top of your knees and the underside of the desk of table.

Display

LCD monitors that show workout time, revolutions, revolutions per minute, and calories burned help keep track of your workouts. But they may not be needed if you are incapacitated.

Exercise

Most of all, a pedal exerciser exercising both arms and legs gives you more options.

Motor

Especially relevant, the motor is used to drive the pedals. Consequently, a motor with adjustable speed gives you different workout intensities. Meanwhile, in the United States, the motor should operate on a standard 120 volt power supply.

Pedal Movement

Pedals that move forward and backwards exercise different muscles of the legs and arms. Studies show that pedaling backwards has been observed to reduce pressure on the tibiofemoral joint which may offer value in the rehabilitation of meniscal problems or tibiofemoral osteoarthritis. In addition, pedaling backwards was associated with higher muscle activation of the quadriceps muscles.

Pedal Straps

Pedal strap help grip your feet to the pedals, which makes it easier to keep your feet on the pedal. In addition, pedal straps need to be adjustable to accommodate various shoe sizes.

Resistance

Epecially relevant, motorized pedals are designed for the incapacitated. Consequently, many provide very little resistance to pedaling than other pedal exercisers. However, motorized pedals do provide resistance, when the motor is turned off.

Skidding

Several of the motorized pedal exercisers have feet that prevents skidding, while others require the use of a rubberized non-skid mat.

Weight

Finally, pedal exercisers that weigh less are easier to carry around. On the other hand, heavier pedal exercisers offer more stability.

How are these Pedals Helpful?

Those Suffering from Stroke

Research presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference in 2015 reported that stroke patients benefited from movement. In fact, stroke patients exercising on motorized pedal exercisers improved motor functions in their arms.

Especially relevant, 17 stroke survivors, ranging in age from 23 to 84, participated in the research. Moreover, these survivors had a stroke six to 12 months prior to the study. Meanwhile, all the 17 survivors participated in upper extremity repetitive exercises to regain arm use. On the other hand, one group of survivors also exercised on motorized stationary bikes for 45 minutes before the extremity repetitive exercises. And, after 24 sessions over an eight-week period, this group experienced a 34 percent improvement in their motor skills.

Furthermore, motor assisted stationary bicycles have also been shown to help patients with Parkinson’s disease, another neurological disorder.

Indeed, the advantage of motorized bike is that it helps patients with limited mobility to pedal and achieve intensity of training necessary to impact brain functions. Moreover, aerobic exercises have been shown to condition the brain for learning. In fact, it’s just not the brain and motor functions that benefit from motorized bikes, but motorized bikes also improve cardiovascular health of stroke patients.

Those with Diabetes or Heart Attacks

Diabetes and Passive Exercise

Research shows that nearly forty percent of Americans have high levels of blood sugar after meals. Regrettably, high levels of blood sugar can damage cells in the body.

Moreover, when blood sugar levels are very high, sugar can stick on the outer membranes of cells. And once there, it can never get off. The sugar is converted by a series of reactions to sorbitol. And the sorbitol destroys the cell.

This cell destruction is the reason why diabetics and pre-diabetics can suffer blindness, certain cancers, deafness, dementia, heart attacks, impotence, loss of feeling in the feet, osteoporosis, strokes, and so on.

Meanwhile, any kind of exercise, including passive movement of muscles by a machine can help prevent diabetes or treat existing diabetes. This is because resting muscles absorb very little sugar from the bloodstream and the little that do draw requires insulin. On the other hand, contracting muscles draw huge amounts of sugar from the bloodstream and don’t even need insulin to do so.

Finally, people with paralysis of their legs are at risk of kidney infections, kidney failure, strokes, heart attacks and diabetes. And, all these people would benefit from passive movement of muscles by a machine such as the motorized pedal.

Takeaways from Studies on Passive Exercise

Especially relevant, a study appeared on page 1,821 in the September 2016 edition of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.  And, this study reported that passive exercise, such as using the motorized pedal helps. In fact, passive exercise helps by burning extra calories, lowering blood sugar, and insulin levels in inactive people. Consequently, by simply having their legs moved by motorized pedal exercisers, the insulin sensitivity of inactive people increased after eating. In fact, this occurred because blood sugar rises were reduced after eating.

In another study, 20 sedentary people rode an electric motor bike which requires the occupant to pedal to keep the motor running. They rode for 40 minutes three time a week. One month later, these sedentary people had lower blood sugar, were more insulin sensitive and had less body fat. In addition, the study showed the sedentary people improved their body fat content and their blood pressure.

Calories from Passive Exercises

Over 60 years ago, scientist found that a person passively moved by motor driven pedals at 56 revolutions per minute, burned at least 7 to 15 kilogram calories per hour. Furthermore, if the person was passively moved at 74 revolutions per minute, the person would burn 19 to 26 kilogram calories per hour.

In addition, two leg passive cycling at 90 revolutions per minute resulted in energy expenditure that is nearly the same as energy expenditure from walking. Or in other words, a person, paralyzed in the legs, using a motor driven stationary bike gets the same amount of exercise as a non-disabled person gets from walking.

Cerebral Palsy

Most noteworthy, treatments  for cerebral palsy include improving joint flexibility, increasing mobility, improving muscle definition, and improving muscle tone. Consequently, motorized pedals, with their ability to move arms and legs passively, is a treatment option..

Other Under Desk Exercise Machines

Comparison with Other Under Desk Exercise Machines

First and foremost, motorized pedals have a circular motion of the lower legs and hence more circular movement of the knees. In addition, motorized pedals exercise glutes, quads, hamstrings, and to a lesser extent the calves.

And, the best way to get carbs is by eating whole grains, vegetables, fruits, beans and other legumes.

Calcium

Calcium helps build strong bones. Also, calcium helps trigger muscle contractions. Most of all, muscles are made of two protein filaments known as myosin and actin. In fact, when muscles contract, these filaments slide over one another to convert Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) to energy. And, the more you exercise, the more ATP your body needs to move your muscles.

Especially relevant, research shows that with insufficient calcium, the body releases calcitrol. In fact, calcitrol is a hormone that causes you to store fat.

Moreover, the way to ingest this best nutrient is by eating yogurt, fortified milk, fortified cereals, cheese, tofu, spinach, almonds, sesame seeds, and sardines.

Copper

Copper helps protect the cardiovascular, nervous, and skeletal systems. In addition, copper also strengthens the tendons needed to lift weights.

The way to get this best nutrient is by eating leafy greens, squash, garlic, nuts, seeds, whole grains, bran, beans, and other legumes.

Omega 3

Omega 3 fatty acids improve blood flow and helps the heart become and stay healthy. In addition, these fats suppress hunger which helps you lose weight.

Also, the best way to get these fatty acids is by eating brazil nuts, flaxseed oil, salmon, mackerel and walnuts.

Potassium

Potassium is a key electrolyte that helps muscles contract. In addition, potassium helps carry nutrients such as water to the muscle cells. Finally, potassium helps your kidneys flush out excess sodium in the body.

Moreover, the way to get this best nutrient is by eating bananas, squash, sweep potatoes, broccoli, chicken, and salmon.

Best Nutrient - Protein

Because they contain amino acids, proteins are needed for muscle growth and repair. Most of all, you need to eat proteins after a workout to restore muscle building macronutrients. Indeed, proteins are a core part of enzymes and hormones that help communicate with the body to repair itself.

The best way to get proteins is from dairy, lean meats, seafood, soy, eggs, beans, and other legumes.

Riboflavin Also Known as Vitamin B-2

Riboflavin helps the breakdown of proteins, carbohydrates and fat, which are transformed into energy. In addition, riboflavin supports antioxidants in the body.

Also, the way to get this nutrient is by eating cornflakes, spinach, eggs, and chicken.

Selenium

Selenium helps boost your immune system and fights damage from free radicals resulting from weight training.

And, the best way to get selenium is by eating fresh tuna, sunflower seeds, wholemeal bread, and brazil nuts.

Vitamin B-12

Vitamin B-12, also known as cobalamin, helps build red blood cells. In fact, red blood cells contain hemoglobin which binds to oxygen. And this oxygen is delivered to the muscles. In addition, vitamin B-12 assists in metabolizing proteins and fat. Indeed, the amino acids produced when protein is metabolized helps repair and build muscles. In the meantime, the fat is a source of energy. Finally, vitamin B-12 helps the brain and muscles to communicate efficiently, which helps muscle growth and co-ordination.

Because, vitamin B-12 is an essential nutrient, you must get it from food. However, if you must get it from supplements, the recommended dosage is 2.4 micrograms per day. In any case, your body can only absorb at most 10 micrograms from a 500 microgram B-12 supplement.

Most of all, the best food sources of vitamin B-12 are poultry, meat, fish, eggs, and dairy.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps metabolize carbs for fuel and also protect the body from oxidative stress. In addition, vitamin C helps the body absorb iron. Furthermore, vitamin C helps fight inflammation in muscles due to excessive exercise. Finally, vitamin C helps with muscle repair because vitamin C supports production of collagen.

In fact, the best food sources of vitamin C are green peppers, broccoli, blackcurrants, and citrus fruits.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D helps build strong bones, glutes, and biceps. Also, vitamin D helps healthy hormones like testosterone, which helps muscle maintenance and growth. In addition, Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus. Meanwhile, calcium helps muscles contract. While phosphorus helps in the synthesis of ATP, the useable form of energy in the body.

Most of all, according to the Institute of Medicine, you need 15 micrograms or 600 international units (IU) of vitamin D daily.

Also, the best food sources of vitamin D include fatty fish like salmon and sardines, fortified yogurt, milk, orange juice, mushrooms, olive oil, sunflower seeds, and eggs.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a nutrient that helps protect your cells from harmful free radicals. When we exercise, we create oxidative stress or free radicals. And, vitamin E helps remove these free radicals. In addition, vitamin E helps flush out metabolic waste. Finally, vitamin E needs fat to dissolve in your body.

And, the recommended daily dosage is 15 milligrams or 22.4 international units for anyone over 14 years and older.

Meanwhile, the best food sources of vitamin E are sunflower seeds, safflower, wheat germ oils, corn, and soybean oils. Also, asparagus, avocado, and nuts such as almonds are good sources. Finally, breakfast cereals, fruit juice, and margarine are also other sources.

On the other hand, cholesterol drugs called statins may not work as well with vitamin E if you also take selenium, vitamin C, and other antioxidants. Finally, vitamin E may even interfere with cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiotherapy. If you have any doubt, always good to check with your medical provider.

Best Nutrient - Zinc

Zinc enables your body to produce muscle-building testosterone. Also, zinc promotes recovery from workouts while increasing the number of infection-fighting T-cells.

Most noteworthy, zinc contributes to muscle growth. In fact, the zinc in your cells is incorporated into hundreds of different proteins. And, one of the proteins regulated by zinc is the growth hormone. Especially relevant, this growth hormone promotes protein synthesis in muscle cells. Therefore, healthy growth hormone is essential for muscle growth.

If you must, according to the Institute of Medicine, men should take about 11 milligrams and women about 8 milligrams of zinc every day.

On the other hand, the best food sources of zinc include red meat, eggs, pulses, pumpkin seeds, and cheese.

Is a Nutritional Supplement Really Good for You?

Is a Nutritional Supplement Really Good for You?

Most noteworthy, over half the people in the U.S. take nutritional supplements on a regular basis. And the main reason for taking a nutritional supplement is their belief that a nutritional supplement may help improve and/or maintain their health.

nutritional supplements

Nutritional Supplement Types

Meanwhile, the National Health and Nutrition surveyed 37,958 U.S. adults in 2012. And, the survey showed that:

  • 52 percent of the survey population were taking a nutritional supplement
  • 31 percent taking multivitamins
  • 19 percent taking vitamin D
  • 14 percent taking calcium
  • 12 percent taking vitamin C

Nutritional Supplement Quality

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that 776 dietary supplements sold over the counter from 2007 through 2016 contained unapproved pharmaceutical ingredients. Consequently, it is important to buy supplements from reputable sources.

Nutritional Supplement Impacts

Vitamin E

In a large clinical test, those who took 40 international units (IU) of vitamin E were more likely to have heart problems compared to those who didn’t. ln addition, a National Institutes of Health study of 20,000 men found that men who took the vitamin E supplement everyday were at a greater risk of prostate cancer.

Studies

A study published in June 2018 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology reported that multivitamins, vitamin C, vitamin D, calcium, and selenium had no effect on preventing cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke, or premature death. Furthermore, the study reported that niacin (vitamin B3) with a statin had increased risk of all-cause mortality. On the other hand, the study reported that folic acid alone and B-vitamins with folic acid may reduce risk of stroke.

Next, another study in July 2018 showed that people who take vitamin and mineral supplements did not see any reduction in risk of heart disease. This study, published in the American Heart Association’s journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, was based on data from 2 million people who were followed for 18 years on average.

Finally, a study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, reported that vitamins B6 and B12 from individual nutritional supplement sources (as opposed to from multivitamins) were associated with a 30 percent to 40 percent increase in lung cancer among men. On the other hand, use of vitamins B6, folate, and B12 supplements showed no effect on lung cancer among women.

Study in Annals of Internal Medicine

Survey Description

Next, yet another survey was conducted to study the use of dietary supplements. Moreover, this survey collected data from 27,000 U.S. adults over the age of 20. In fact, these adults were found to be generally healthy. In the survey, these participants answered questions about their use of a nutritional supplement and their diets. And, the results of the study were recently (April 2019) published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Indeed, the study reported that over 50 percent of the survey participants used at least one nutritional supplement, while more than 33 percent used multivitamins. Especially, relevant, those who took dietary supplements were more likely to be female, white, have high levels of education, and high income. Furthermore, they were also more likely to eat a healthy diet and lead a physically active lifestyle.

Commonly Used Dietary Supplements

Especially relevant, vitamin C was the most commonly used nutritional supplement, followed by vitamin E, calcium, and vitamin D.

Meanwhile, the study also found that vitamins A and K, along with magnesium, zinc, and copper were associated with lower risk of death from heart disease or stroke. In addition, these vitamins and minerals were linked to overall lower risk of dying in the average six years of follow-up after the survey. Paradoxically, this linkage to lower risk of death was only true when the vitamins and minerals were ingested from foods and not from taking nutritional supplements.

Highlights

In addition, the study found that taking a thousand milligrams of calcium supplements, daily, increased risk of death. On the other hand, ingesting calcium directly from foods had no effect on risk of death.

In summary, taking dietary supplements provided no benefits to the generally healthy survey population. In fact, there is no need to take a nutritional  supplement when eating a healthy balanced diet.

On the other hand, dietary supplements are not a substitute for not eating a healthy balanced diet. Most of all, avoid highly processed foods because the processing strips many foods of vitamins, minerals, and fiber.

Most noteworthy, it’s not clear why nutrients from supplements don’t provide the same benefits as the nutrients found in food. It may be that while the body can regulate and limit absorption of nutrients found in food, the body can’t do the same with the concentrated nutrients found in supplements.

When to Take a Nutritional Supplement

So, if you are healthy there is no need to take dietary supplements. On the other hand, if your medical provider reports deficiency in certain nutrients, then taking supplements, recommended by the medical provider, is the right thing to do.

In addition, there are times when vitamin and mineral supplements are necessary and important. For instance, anyone following a vegan diet may not get enough omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B12, and vitamin D. Also, you may need to take a nutritional supplement to help your skin.

Nutritional Supplement Guidelines

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans have published the following recommendations:

  • Anyone over 50 years old. They should consume vitamin B12 in its crystalline form from fortified breakfast cereals or as a supplement
  • Women of childbearing age who may become pregnant and adolescent females. They should eat foods like meats that contains iron or iron-rich plant foods like cooked dry beans or spinach, or iron-fortified cereals, along with vitamin C.
  • Women of childbearing age who may become pregnant and those who are pregnant. They should eat adequate synthetic folic acid daily from fortified foods or supplements in addition to the food forms of folate.
  • Older adults, people with dark skin should take extra vitamin D from fortified foods or supplements. Also, the trend to protect yourself from the sun’s rays and staying out of the sun for extended periods of time results in not getting enough vitamin D naturally. Consequently, vitamin D from fortified foods or supplements may help fill the void.

Finally, pregnant women need prenatal vitamins. Also, nursing mothers, people with food allergies, certain people with vitamin deficiencies, people with cancer, kidney, bone or cardiovascular diseases. They all need prescription supplements.

Summary

In summary, it is best to get your vitamins and minerals from your diet. However, if that is not possible, taking dietary supplements is the next best thing. And just to be safe, discuss it with your medical provider before you actually start taking them.

The Power of Being Fit and Healthy

The Power of Being Fit and Healthy

People, in general, tend to take health and fitness for granted. In fact, it’s only when something isn’t right that they try to do something about it. For example, if you are naturally gifted and healthy, it’s unlikely you’ll think too much on what you eat or how much physical activity you are getting. On the other hand, if you are underweight, overweight, or have some other malady, you’ll get more focused on your diet and exercise. However, almost everyone needs to pay attention to their health and fitness.

fit and healthy

How do you Evaluate these Pedals?

In fact, use the factors described below to grade these medical pedal exercisers.

Desk Use

Most noteworthy, many people would prefer to use the medical pedal exerciser under a desk or table while they work. In fact, several of the medical pedal exercisers may fit under a desk or table. However, it all depends on the maximum height a pedal rises above the floor. In addition, it depends on the clearance between the top of your knees and the underside of the desk of table.

Display

Next, LCD monitors that show workout time, revolutions, revolutions per minute, and calories burned help keep track of your workouts. But they are not absolutely needed if you trying to recover from an injury or surgery.

Indeed, nearly all pedal exercisers are lightweight weighing less than 13 pounds.

Foldable

Also, foldable pedal exercisers are easy to move and put away after use. Moreover, they take up less space in storage when compared to pedal exercisers that don’t.

Pedal Movement

Next, pedals that move forward and backwards exercise different muscles of the legs and arms. Also, studies show that pedaling backwards has been observed to reduce pressure on the tibiofemoral joint which may offer value in the rehabilitation of meniscal problems or tibiofemoral osteoarthritis. In addition, pedaling backwards was associated with higher muscle activation of the quadriceps muscles.

Pedal Straps

In addition, pedal straps help grip your feet to the pedals, which makes it easier to pedal. Moreover, pedal straps need to be adjustable to accommodate various shoe sizes.

Resistance

Most noteworthy, medical pedal exercisers are designed for rehab and physical therapy. Consequently, they provide much lower resistance to pedaling than other pedal exercisers.

Skidding

Also, some pedal exercisers provide a strap to hold the pedal exerciser tied to a chair. While others have feet that prevents skidding.

Warranty

Next, the longer the warranty period the better you are protected against manufacturing defects. Also, a 90-day period will cover majority of manufacturing defects. Because most defects are found in this period, it’s important to ensure your purchase is covered during that time. In addition, a longer warranty period, implies that the pedal exerciser is better built to last a longer time.

Weight

Finally, pedal exercisers that weigh less are easier to carry around. On the other hand, heavier pedal exercisers offer more stability.

Why are these Pedals Helpful?

Most of all, the medical pedal exerciser helps you in the following ways.

  1. 1
First and foremost, the medical pedal exerciser improves mobility
  2. 2
    Next, it improves blood circulation
  3. 3
Also, it strengthens legs and arms. For example, by exercising hips flexors, glutes, calves, hamstrings and quadriceps. Also, exercising biceps, triceps, and forearms.
  4. 4
In addition, it is used for physical therapy of legs, arms, knees, and shoulders
  5. 5
Furthermore, it is used for knee or shoulder rehabilitation following surgery or injury
  6. 6
In addition, it improves joint flexibility of shoulders, elbows, and wrists
  7. 7
Also, the medical pedal exerciser prevents muscle rigidity during rehabilitation of the elderly
  8. 8
And, it is used for body rehabilitation – activate stiff legs and arms
  9. 9
Finally, the medical exerciser provides gentle low impact exercise for muscle toning during physiotherapy

How are these Pedals Used?

First and foremost, medical pedal exercisers have a circular motion of the lower legs and hence more circular movement of the knees. In addition, medical pedal exercisers exercise glutes, quads, hamstrings, and to a lesser extent the calves.

Video Showing Folding Pedals in Use

How do you Evaluate these Pedals?

In fact, use the factors described below to grade these folding pedals.

Display

Display helps you keep track of your workouts. Example of workout measurements include exercise time, revolutions (or rotations), revolutions per minute, and calories burned.

Also, the feet help prevent the pedal exerciser from from sliding as you pedal. Indeed, nearly all pedal exercisers are lightweight weighing less than 15 pounds.

Foldable

Next, a foldable pedal exerciser makes it easier to store it in small spaces. In addition, foldable exercisers are easier to carry around.

Footprint

Most of all, the footprint tells you how much space the pedal exerciser is going to need, so you can decide if the pedal exerciser is going to fit where you intend to use it.

Moreover, the pedal straps need to be adjustable to accommodate various foot sizes.

Storage

Foldable pedal exercisers take up less space in storage.

Because the pedal exercisers are used in front of a couch, on a table, among other places, being lightweight becomes an advantage in terms of moving it from one place to another.

Use

In addition, manufacturers design pedal exercisers for different use. So you want to look at pedal exercisers targeted to your need. For example, some pedal exercisers are designed for the handicapped, some for beginners. While others are designed for strengthening your arms and legs or used under a desk, while in the office or at home.

Warranty

The longer the warranty period the better you are protected against manufacturing defects. Generally, a 90-day period will cover the majority of manufacturing defects. Since most defects are found in this period, it’s important to ensure your purchase is covered during that time. In addition, a longer warranty period, implies that the pedal exerciser is better built to last a longer time.

Weight

Finally, pedal exercisers that weigh less are easier to carry around. On the other hand, heavier pedal exercisers offer more stability.

Conclusion

In conclusion, you are looking for essentially a pedal exerciser that:

  • 1
Will allow you to use the pedal exerciser on the floor or on a table
  • 2
    Is reasonably solid
  • 3
    Is quiet
  • 4
    Offers adjustable tension
  • 5
Displays exercise time, count of revolutions, revolutions per minute, and calories burned
  • 6
Has at least a 90-day warranty

What are Your Needs?

First and foremost, itemize what you want from a folding pedal exerciser. For example, the list below gives you a start.

  • 1
How much physical space is there for the folding pedal exerciser?
  • 2
Does the folding pedal exerciser need to keep track of workouts?
  • 3
Is the pedal exerciser going to be used for exercising your arms and legs?
  • 4
How much use is the folding pedal exerciser going to get every day?

Indeed, answers to these questions and others will help guide you to the folding pedal that's best for you.

What Problems do these Pedals Solve?

Hours Spent Sitting

Especially relevant, according to the 2017 American time use survey by Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American spent each day:

  • 1
1.11 hours on eating and drinking
  • 2
    4.14 hours working
  • 3
    0.52 hours on socializing,
  • 4
    2.5 hours watching TV
  • 5
0.16 hours on the telephone, going through mail, and taking care of emails

Indeed, for the most part, all these activities involve sitting. As a result, the average American spends 8.43 hours each day sitting. Furthermore, this number is in line with other surveys and studies on the subject of sitting.

Consequence of Too Much Sitting

Especially relevant, prolonged sitting on a regular basis results in health problems such as:

  • 1
    Metabolic syndrome
  • 2
    Poor blood circulation
  • 3
    Obesity
  • 4
    Posture
  • 5
    Develop diseases
  • 6
    Cancer
  • 7
    Mental Health
  • 8
    Longevity
  • 9
    Mortality

But most of all, prolonged sitting effects the muscles in the arms and the lower body.

Effect of Sitting on Arm Muscles

Most noteworthy, the major muscle groups in the arms are:

  • 1
The biceps located in front of the upper arms
  • 2
The triceps located in the back of the upper arm, and
  • 3
The forearms in your lower arms

And, all of these arm muscles are affected by sitting too much. In fact, the triceps are a common area for fat deposits, meaning you’re most likely to notice excess, flabby skin in this area.

Effect of Sitting on Lower Body Muscles

Indeed, the legs contain the most muscle groups in your body. And, too much sitting causes the quads, hamstrings, and calves to change. In fact, these muscles become less toned as the muscles get smaller and less defined. Indeed, the effects are first seen on your upper legs and hips, where fat deposits are common. Above all, these changes are largely due to the fact that fat in this area tends to be less metabolically active than the fat in other areas of the body.

Next, the buttocks are made up of three major muscle groups: the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus. And, too much sitting causes these muscles to soften and become undefined, leaving your butt looking flat and misshapen. Moreover, as these muscles lose their tone, you may have difficulty maintaining good balance.

In fact, that’s where the foldable pedal exercisers help. Moreover, the foldable pedal exerciser is used while you are sitting on a chair to exercise your arms and legs.

How do these Pedals Solve the Problems?

Is there Proof that Using Pedals Really Helps Your Body?

What Muscles does the Foldable Pedal Exerciser Help?

Above all, there are two ways the foldable pedal exerciser is used: one for exercising the arms and one for exercising the legs.

Exercising Arm Muscles

When used for exercising the arms, the pedal exerciser is on a table with you sitting in a chair. Furthermore, in this mode, the pedal exerciser is used to strengthen and tone the arms. In fact, the muscles exercised include the biceps, triceps, shoulders and forearms.

Exercising Leg Muscles

When used for exercising legs, the pedal exerciser is on the floor with you sitting in a chair behind it. Furthermore, in this mode, the pedal exerciser is used to strengthen and tone the legs. In fact, the muscles exercised include the hips flexors, glutes, calves, hamstrings and quadriceps.

Other Health Benefits

Above all, the foldable pedal exerciser helps you in the following ways.

  • 1
    Prevents varicose veins.
  • 2
The pedal exerciser exercises the calf muscles which increases blood circulation to your feet and ankles and stops blood from pooling.
  • 6
Strengthens and tones the arms by exercising the biceps, triceps, shoulders and forearms.
  • 7
    Helps you lose weight
  • 8
    Gives you some aerobic exercise

How are these Pedals Used?

Other Under Desk Exercise Machines

Comparison with Other Under Desk Exercise Machines

First and foremost, folding pedal exercisers have a circular motion of the lower legs and hence more circular movement of the knees. In addition, folding pedal exercisers exercise glutes, quads, hamstrings, and to a lesser extent the calves.
